Final Artist Book Project

What you will do:
Individually or in pairs, you are to create a handmade book based around one artist.   There will be suggestions of different artists posted in the room for you to consider.  You may also pick your own artist if there is someone that interests you (just okay it with me first).  You will work on this project both during class and outside of class throughout the quarter.  DO NOT COUNT ON BEING ABLE TO FINISH THIS PROJECT WITH THE TIME GIVEN IN CLASS ONLY!  There will also be periodic progress checks on your books.  You will be warned ahead of time when these progress checks will be and what I will be checking.  It will be presented and turned in the last week of the quarter. Anytime you finish class work early would be a great time to get busy on this final project.

Guidelines to follow:
  • Your book must be a handmade book.
Ideas: accordion-style book, Japanese stab-binding book, book made out of cardboard, pop-  ups…
(research handmade book making technique as to how you want your book to look)
  • Your book must have decorated front and back covers relating to the artist chosen.
·         Your book must have information about your artist’s life and work.
·         Your book must include an original artwork made by you inspired by one of the artist’s famous artworks. (If you are working with a partner, each partner must create an original artwork in the book)
·         You book must have a reference page at the end listing any sources you used.
·         Lastly, your book must be creative! A simple turn-the-page book will not cut it! Think fold-outs, pockets, secret compartments in the book, peek-a-boo windows…the possibilities are endless!

There will be a specific rubric given to you at a later date.

Visual Arts Course information

Visual Art
Ms. Lisa Krannichfeld, E-Stem Middle
lisa.krannichfeld@estemlr.net

A. Course Description/Objectives
In this class you will be cultivating your art-making skills through a variety of art projects including collage, drawing, and painting.  A variety of sources will serve as inspiration for your art-making such as your personal interests and experiences and social issues happening around the world.  You will also learn to appreciate the art of others and the importance art has in human society. Lastly, you will learn to read and write in response to art.

B. Teacher’s Expectations
Here at eStem, all of the teachers have high expectations for every student.  This holds true in my art class as well.  I expect each student to put forth their best effort on every assignment, to come to class everyday prepared and eager to learn, and to contribute to a successful learning community.  In return, I promise that you will learn more than you ever imagined.  The beauty of art is that it teaches you many, many things… if you let it.

C. Materials Needed – bring these items to class everyday!

3 prong pocketed folder with paper

Hand-held pencil sharpener
Pencil
Big eraser

(your first assignment worth points will be a supplies check – have these materials by Thurs 1/6!)

D. Class Rules
1. Bring all necessary materials every day. Take RESPONSIBILITY for your success!
2. NO cell phones, MP3 players, etc. These will be confiscated if seen.
4. NO food or drinks in the classroom. Water is acceptable.
5. CLEAN up after yourselves. You have a beautiful art studio, so let’s keep it that way!
6. Be RESPECTFUL of yourselves, your classmates, your classroom, and your teacher.
7. Have an OPEN MIND.
8. Come to class everyday ready to LEARN, ready to CREATE!

I do not tolerate disrespect, disruptive behavior, close-mindedness, or laziness!

G. Syllabus
Each week will consist of one main art project and several smaller written assignments.  At the end of the course there will be a final artist/art movement project due, done individually or in pairs.  Tests and quizzes may be given at the teacher’s discretion.

Projects include (not necessarily in this order):

“Moody” Monochromatic Landscape Collages
Artist Trading Cards
Artist/Art Movement Books
Op Art
Self Portraits
Collaborative Figure Installation

Key concepts covered (not necessarily in this order):

The Elements and Principles of Art
Art Criticism and Self-Reflection
Composition and Unity in art

F. Grading
90-100  A           70-79    C
80-89    B           60-69    D      0-59      F

Grading will be based on individual progress made by each student.  Your best effort needs to be put both into the art projects and classroom assignments in order to complete this course successfully.  Don’t think you will pass if you only do the art projects!!!
